Designing a Comprehensive Home Video Surveillance System with Ubiquiti Network Technology

Client Overview: An older couple located in a suburban neighborhood reached out to us for a comprehensive WiFi and home video surveillance solution. They were looking to enhance the security of their property with a system that offered full outdoor coverage, real-time alerts, and onsite backup of recorded footage.

Challenge: The client wanted a system that would provide robust outdoor monitoring for critical areas like entrances, driveways, and pathways while integrating seamlessly into their existing home network. They needed a system that was easy to manage, allowed remote access for live monitoring, and offered reliable alerts and backup solutions. Their current system, however, was too weak to reach all areas of the house. They also wanted to avoid unnecessary alerts. The ability to capture and store license plate data for vehicles was also a key requirement.

Solution:

  1. Camera Placement: We carefully designed the placement of outdoor cameras to provide maximum coverage with minimal blind spots. The following camera types were selected:

    • Front Door Camera: Positioned to cover the entryway, capturing the front door and any approaching visitors. This camera was equipped with a wide-angle lens and night vision capabilities for 24/7 surveillance.

    • Driveway Cameras: Multiple cameras were placed strategically along the alley and driveway to monitor vehicle movement and capture detailed footage of cars as they entered or exited the property. These cameras had high-definition resolution to ensure clear video capture of license plates.

    • License Plate Capture Cameras: Specialized high-resolution cameras were installed at key points, including the entrance to the driveway, aimed specifically to capture the details of vehicle license plates. These cameras featured enhanced zoom and frame rate capabilities for accurate identification of license plates, even at higher speeds or in low light conditions.

    • Backyard Cameras: Additional cameras were placed around the backyard and side gates to monitor any potential unauthorized access or activity. These cameras were weatherproof, with motion detection sensors, ensuring continuous monitoring regardless of weather conditions.

  2. Home Video Monitoring: The entire system was connected to a Ubiquiti-powered network, ensuring fast and stable connectivity for high-definition video streaming. The client was provided with remote access to live video feeds from all cameras through a dedicated app, available on mobile devices or computers. The Ubiquiti network offered reliable, secure connections even in areas with high device density, ensuring that the video quality was consistent and uninterrupted.

The client could view live footage, zoom in on areas of interest, and review past footage with ease, all while maintaining a seamless user experience.

  3. Alerts and Notifications: Real-time alerts were set up to notify the client whenever motion was detected by any camera. These notifications were customized to be more specific, with certain cameras (such as the driveway and entry points) being set to trigger alerts based on motion or vehicle activity.

The system was configured to send push notifications to the client's mobile device, along with still images or short video clips captured at the moment of detection. This allowed for immediate decision-making, whether it was verifying an intruder or simply monitoring an expected visitor. The motion sensitivity settings were also adjustable to minimize false alarms, such as small animals or tree movement.

  4. License Plate Recognition: For enhanced vehicle tracking, the license plate capture cameras were integrated with a database that allowed the client to log and retrieve vehicle details, such as license plate numbers. The system could automatically store the captured plate information with timestamps for future reference. This feature became especially useful for monitoring guest arrivals, deliveries, or tracking unknown vehicles entering the property.

  5. Backup and Data Retention: To ensure reliable storage and protection of video footage, we implemented a hybrid backup solution that combined local storage via a high-capacity NAS (Network-Attached Storage) unit with secure cloud backups.

The cloud backup ensured that in case of any local system failure or tampering, footage remained secure and accessible remotely. We configured the system for encrypted video storage on both the NAS and cloud servers to safeguard the client’s data from unauthorized access. The client also had full control over the retention policies, allowing them to decide how long footage was stored before being automatically deleted, helping to manage storage space efficiently.

Outcome: This couple now enjoys a comprehensive video surveillance system with complete outdoor coverage. The Ubiquiti-powered network ensures reliable connectivity and high-quality video streaming. The ability to monitor live footage remotely, receive detailed alerts, and capture important vehicle data through license plate recognition has given the client confidence in the security of their property. Additionally, the secure backup solution ensures that all footage is safely stored and easily retrievable whenever necessary.

The family has expressed peace of mind knowing they can monitor their home from anywhere and receive instant notifications on any suspicious activity, all backed by a reliable system built for long-term security.
